| Matt S. Nightingale |
| Squadron Leader Matt S. Nightingale was born in Mobile, Alabama in 1906 and moved to Canada in 1922 where he later graduated from McGill university with an engineering degree in 1928. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and worked with the Air Force's communications sections because of his engineering background. The commission's evidence against Nightingale was, to say the least, extremely weak. He admitted to having been in contact with members of the Soviet embassy, but denied passing on confidential information. The commissioners based their accusation of guilt solely on Nightingale's known association with the Russians which, according to the OSA, was sufficient evidence of guilt. Nightingale was later acquitted at trial. |
